I didn't like what they did for Kirk's character. As someone who liked Star Trek but was far from a "Trekkie", though, I have to say that I came away really having enjoyed the film. I admit I am a Trekkie at heart. I, too, grew up on re-runs of Star Trek and the subsequent explosion of the Star Trek phenomenon. I could never really accept ST: TNG (the first season was awful) nor any of the attempts to re-vitalize the series. The novels, for me, were fun reads, but, to me, the 'true' story was the original series; everything else became Star Trek 'fiction'. The 'reboot' movie Star Trek, I thought, stood well on its own. And, I cannot agree more.. I kept waiting (and wanting, actually) the standard Star Trek solution: the correction of the time line. I loved the people chosen to play the characters, and I felt that they did a great job portraying younger, less experienced versions of the infamous crew.
